Cheesy Cheddar Facts
- Queen Victoria was gifted a giant wheel of cheddar for a wedding gift in 1840. It weighed over 1000 pounds!
- Cheddar cheese originated from the Somerset village of Cheddar. The Cheddar Gorge caves provide the perfect environment for maturing cheese.
- During World War II, the majority of milk in the UK was used to make a single kind of cheese called ‘Government Cheddar’ which helped with war time rationing but almost wiped out all other cheeses!
- The process of making cheddar is a unique one. After the curds are heated, they are cut and stacked and then periodically turned and re-stacked. This process is known as ‘cheddaring’.
- Scott of the Antarctic took a huge amount of cheddar cheese with him on his famous 1901 expedition. 3500 pounds of it to be precise. The high carbohydrate and fat provides energy and keeps blood sugar levels high which is why Arctic and Antarctic explorers still take cheese and other fatty products like butter with them on their travels today.
- A cheese can only be called a ‘West Country Farmhouse Cheddar’ if it is produced using milk sourced from within the Somerset, Devon, Dorset or Cornwall counties and is made using traditional methods.
